Chinese Embassy in Nepal expresses serious concern over ‘fake news’

Kathmandu: The Chinese Embassy in Nepal has expressed serious concern over allegations circulating on Nepali social media and in some media outlets claiming that ‘Chinese nationals attempted to bribe certain journalists.’ The embassy has categorically rejected the accusations, describing them as a deliberate smear campaign against China.

In a statement issued by the embassy spokesperson, China reiterated that it has consistently adhered to a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. The statement also asserted that China has continuously supported Nepal’s national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The spokesperson stated that China has been cooperating with Nepal in promoting political stability, economic development, and improvements in people’s livelihoods. The embassy further urged the concerned Nepali authorities to conduct a serious, thorough, and impartial investigation into the allegations currently being circulated. It also called for strict legal action under Nepali law against any individuals found responsible, including those allegedly involved in orchestrating the incident.

The embassy additionally stated that China remains ready to further strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation with Nepal. ‘Let reason and truth put an end to rumors and misinformation,’ the statement said. ‘We believe the Nepali people can distinguish right from wrong and will continue working together to strengthen China–Nepal friendship and cooperation.’

The embassy’s response came after reports emerged regarding a masked woman allegedly leaving a bottle of liquor and Rs 50,000 in cash at the office of Jana Aastha weekly, which was later linked to suspicious activities in media reports. Following the incident, Jana Aastha also issued a separate clarification regarding the unsolicited cash and liquor left at its office.

Jana Aastha editor-in-chief Kishor Shrestha said police have launched an investigation into the individual who left the unsolicited gifts.
