China Urges Calm in Nepal, Hopes for Quick Restoration of Stability

Kathmandu – China has expressed hope that all sections of Nepali society will properly resolve the country’s internal issues and restore social order and national stability as soon as possible, Reuters reported. Citing a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Wednesday, Reuters noted this statement.

“We hope all sides in Nepal will properly address internal issues and restore social order and national stability at the earliest,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular press briefing, adding that China has already urged its citizens in Nepal to pay special attention to their safety.

He also noted that China and Nepal have traditionally been friendly neighbors, according to the Global Times.

“Lin expressed hope that all sides in Nepal would address internal issues appropriately and restore social order and national stability as soon as possible,” the Global Times reported.

China issued a safety advisory to its citizens in Nepal after protesters set fire to the parliament building and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. This has been described as the worst violence to hit the Himalayan nation in the past two decades.

Protesters also set fire to government buildings and the homes of politicians. Amid widespread criticism of the country’s political elite and alleged corruption, the Nepal Army assumed responsibility for national security operations at 10 p.m. on September 9.
