‘Festive week marking 70 years of Nepal–China diplomatic relations’ officially inaugurated

Kathmandu:The Cultural Week commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and the People’s Republic of China was formally inaugurated on friday at a grand opening ceremony, highlighting the long-standing friendship, cultural exchange, and cooperation between the two nations.

On the occasion of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, various programs will be organized for one week starting from Friday, November 28. The week-long events, organized by the Confucius Institute, will be held in various schools and colleges where the Chinese language is taught. The programs are aranged by the collaboration of ‘Confusious Institute at Kathmandu University, Confusious Institute at Ttibhuwan University and Chinese Ecucation Society Nepal’.

on the opening day, event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Mr. Surendra Raj Gosai, Member of Bagmati Provincial Assembly; Prof. Dr. Rajeev Shrestha, Registrar of Kathmandu University; Prof. Dr. Khadga KC, Rector of Tribhuvan University; Prof. Dr. Bijay KC, Dean of Kathmandu University School of Management; and Prof. Dr. Uddhab Pyakurel, Dean of Kathmandu University School of Arts. Also present were representatives from Chinese and Nepalese cultural and business communities, including Ms. Xiao Jiang, Director of the China Culture Center, and leaders of various Nepal–China associations.

The program commenced with the playing of the national anthems of Nepal and China, symbolizing mutual respect and diplomatic harmony. This was followed by welcome addresses delivered by Prof. Dr. Rajeev Shrestha and Prof. Dr. Li Shuangcheng, Director of the Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University, who emphasized the importance of cultural cooperation in strengthening bilateral relations.

A vibrant series of cultural performances enriched the ceremony. Nepali and Chinese teachers jointly presented the group song “Nepal Welcomes You,” followed by a traditional Newari dance by Modern School/College. Musical performances, poetry recitations, and classical Chinese songs such as The Moon Represents My Heart showcased the shared artistic spirit of both countries.

Students from various schools and universities performed dances depicting the Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs, demonstrated Chinese calligraphy, enacted dramas, and presented traditional Nepali performances including the popular dance “Choli Ramro.” A Shaolin Kungfu performance by Shaolin Nepal added further excitement to the celebrations.

The ceremony also featured prize distribution segments recognizing outstanding contributions and participation. A group song titled “Great China” by students of Jyapu Samaj Yala concluded the cultural presentations.

The program ended with a closing speech by Prof. Dr. Khadga KC, who reaffirmed the commitment of Nepal and China to continue fostering people-to-people ties and cultural understanding. The event concluded with group photographs of distinguished guests, performers, and representatives from the Confucius Institutes of Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University.

The Cultural Week stands as a testament to seven decades of strong diplomatic relations, mutual respect, and enduring friendship between Nepal and China.
