Russian Embassy Hosts New Year Event in Kathmandu, Emphasizes Media Role in Nepal-Russia Ties

Kathmandu – Marking the occasion of the Nepali New Year, the Russian Embassy in Nepal hosted a special greetings exchange program with journalists and experts at a hotel in Naxal, extending warm wishes for health, prosperity, and continued national development.

Minister Counsellor and Chargé d’affaires Mr. Rinchen Rakshaev praised the media’s professionalism and its active role in covering international affairs, including developments related to Russia. He stressed that accurate, fact-based reporting is vital for building mutual understanding and trust between Nepal and Russia. He also noted that collaboration between the Russian Journalists Union (RUJ) and Journalists for Justice Nepal (JJN) would further strengthen and expand bilateral ties.

Highlighting recent diplomatic progress, the embassy noted a significant high-level meeting between the two countries held last year on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Opportunities to enhance economic cooperation were also underlined, particularly in key sectors such as energy, fertilizer supply, and tourism. Despite global challenges, a modest rise in Russian tourist arrivals to Nepal was observed in March, signaling positive momentum.

The First Secretary, Mr. Denis Shcherbakov, the Embassy’s Press Secretary Alexander Ivashev, along with other senior officials, were present at the program, which also saw a strong presence of Nepali journalists and experts.

The embassy acknowledged the vital role of journalists in fostering strong bilateral relations, noting that Nepal’s positive perception of Russia is shaped not only by historical ties but also by responsible media coverage.

Looking ahead, the embassy expressed optimism for deeper collaboration between Russian and Nepali media institutions. Potential initiatives include cooperation between journalist organizations and participation of Nepali experts in international fact-checking efforts.

Reaffirming its commitment to openness, the Russian Embassy pledged continued engagement with Nepal’s media and expert community, offering support in connecting with Russian media and specialists.
